15 Min - Over the mudflats and across the tidal channel
15 Min - The harbour sandspit high tide access walks
From the car park there is a 10—15 min walk to the beach itself. It begins at the footbridge over the Wahitapu Stream and follows tracks through the pine forest to the dunes and the white sands of the ocean beach.
The beach provides one of the longest beach walks on the Coromandel, being about 5 kms from the southern estuary to the rocky cliffs in the Ohui area to the north, well over an hour away.
The Bird Sanctuary
The Opoutere sandspit is a significant nesting area of both the New Zealand Dotterel & the Variable Oystercatcher.
NB: There is a complete ban of dogs from this area of the beach
