We welcome responsible freedom campers in Whangamata. However we need to have a few rules to keep our town and it's surroundings clean and beautiful so that everyone can enjoy our special part of New Zealand. There is a Freedom Camping Bylaw 2014 in order to help manage this, made under the Freedom Camping Act 2011.
Only certified self-contained freedom camping is permitted. Make sure you know the rules and read the signage. There are areas that are prohibited or restricted and these are clearly sign posted. If you're a tourist and are unsure if your vehicle complies please ask your rental company.

What to do with your rubbish and recycling:
Blue rubbish bags are available at local supermarkets and you can drop your rubbish and recyclables off at Whangamata's refuse transfer station, 2755 SH25 Waihi-Whangamata, Whangamata - located at the southern end or town just after the cemetary on the right. If you do not have a blue rubbish bag please pay $3 in the moneybox.
Public Toilets and Dump Stations:
Please don't use the roadside as a toilet and definitely don't use any waterways to dump anything.
